Windsurfing: Ogmore Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: F4-5 Surf / Sea State: v messy Air Temperature: 19C Sea Temperature: warm Weather: sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
I was dithering on the M4 approaching the Bridgend turnoff: Ogmore - where
I've never sailed before & Nigel said he was going all the same 'cos Ian K
was there - or Newton which I knew would work well in the forecast wind
direction??
The car veered L onto the slip road, so Ogmore it was to be.
More dithering ensued as Ian suggested I rig 6.2m. I'm very glad I rigged
5.5m - it was about spot on. Board was 86l Goya wave. Had I known the
location better/had the wind been more cross-shore, I'd probably have used
my JP 78l wave.
Fun was had, but the wind & waves were pretty much dead onshore, so it was
never going to be special. A few scary "run-away" moments with wave lines
peaking and no way of getting over/through/under them - just bear away, and
outrun them!
I managed to break a harness line, and put a small hole in my sail. In
fact, a long-standing crease in the monofilm turned into a slight crack. It
was always going to happen - just a matter of when. It's nothing that can't
be fixed by 2" tape on either side.
When my harness line did break, the good news is I was still well within my
depth. The bad news is, I was in the river mouth. So the river was flowing
past one way, the waves catching me from the other way. Nothing too hairy,
but the stony/rocky seabed there was a bit sore on bare feet, whilst being
pushed around by the current/waves.
I'd always heard the water quality at Ogmore was a bit suspect: I'd have to
say that it didn't taste too good - not that I especially wanted to sample
it - & there was the slight taint of hypochlorite in the air. What's more,
the water was surprisingly un-salty - even well S of the river mouth. Maybe
the incoming tide & waves holding the "fresh" water back?
OTOH, no hint (yet) of any "internal problems", so maybe water not too bad?
